Wingman

Summary

Blending in with the party

Wingman is a comedic social espionage game built in Unity Game Engine by a team of myself and 4 other students.

The premise of the game is that you, The Wingman, are a wingsuit enthusiast whose mission is to soar from rooftop party to rooftop party and help your client partygoer hit it off with a target partygoer. Unfortunately, there are a variety of obstacles in your way.

For one, the target has no interest in your client, so you’ve got to talk him up and, sometimes, stretch the truth a bit to get them impressed. Interest isn’t enough however if your client doesn’t have the confidence to make a move in the first place. It’s your job to get them pumped up with some words of encouragement, and maybe a couple mints for that breath. Oh, and throughout the entire time that you’re working with these two potential lovebirds, there’s bouncers monitoring this party. This party that you were not invited to.

Models
First, I created the different character models according to a more cartoon-ish art style that we had agreed on as a team. This was done in Maya, which also allowed us to easily create basic character textures with the 3D texture painting tool. I created most of the NPC textures, with the basic Wingman texture and a couple of other NPC textures done by other teammates.
Animations
As we play tested the game, we repeatedly received feedback that suggested adding animations to the characters as a way to improve immersion and really bring “life” into these characters being interacted with. As no one on the team had prior animation experience, we researched online and found the Auto Rigging tool by Mixamo. This gave us a basic enough animation set to work with, as well as took care of the rigging and skinning process. From here it was my job to create Animation Controllers, including setting up animation state machines and writing an extra script so that the animations as a whole could be easily interfaced with by the rest of my team.
